The Mowbray Wedding Photography & Videography
The Mowbray is a contemporary celebration space just off Kelham Island in Sheffield commonly used for wedding receptions and parties. This almost century-and-a-half old venue is a perfect example of the urban regeneration in this area of the city combining a large main room with an upper terrace where guests can gather after the ceremony for drinks, mingling and evening celebrations.
The Main Space
Originally a steel and iron merchants, the interior at The Mowbray is centred around one huge, open post-industrial space, with high ceilings and original period arched windows. It’s the core of the reception, where guests gather after a ceremony held elsewhere. This grand space can accomodate up to 160 seated guests for the wedding breakfast or 250 when it comes to the evening celebrations!
The Upper Terrace
One of the elements that distinguishes The Mowbray from purely indoor celebration spaces is its upper terrace.
This outdoor area can be used throughout the reception — particularly during drinks, quieter conversations and relaxed moments after the ceremony. Guests move between the main room and the terrace without it feeling like a separate location, but rather an extension of the same celebration. It’s a clear visual contrast that works well for both photography and videography.
The terrace can also offer different light conditions and backgrounds that provide variation in imagery without relocating to a different venue.
Celebration Flow
At most weddings held here, guests will arrive after the ceremony - be that from the Mowbray’s sister site, the Chimney House on Kelham Island, the Town Hall or other local space.
The size of the main hall means that once guests arrive things never feel cramped or constrained and as photographers and videographers we can move unobtrusively around the space capturing all the natural interactions as people mingle together.
With the anticipation of the ceremony completed, this is a moment of pure celebration - with everyone cangratulating the newly married couple with hugs, smiles and maybe even a few happy tears.
Light and Atmosphere
During the day, the windows provide an ever-changing lighting palette; hard architectural light during the day, shifting to soft, even light in the afternoon.
As the evening draws in, the floor-to-ceiling curtains close and the venues warm hanging lighting creates a whole new atmosphere as more people gather inside.
Photography & Videography at The Mowbray
Working at The Mowbray is focused on observing how the space is used, rather than moving between locations.
With most of the day taking place in one environment, we focus in on wider scenes to smaller interactions kept within one cohesive space.
Nothing needs to be paused or repeated. The structure of the venue allows the day to flow without interruption, with our coverage following that rather than ever needing to direct it.
A More Contained Setting
Compared to venues with large grounds, The Mowbray keeps guests within a more defined space.
The terrace adds variation, but the day remains centred around the main room. This creates a steady rhythm, with people moving in and out rather than the day being broken into separate locations.
If you’re planning a wedding at The Mowbray and are looking for photography and videography that works alongside the day without interrupting it, you can see more of our approach across UK weddings here.
