How Much Time Do You Need for Wedding Photography & Videography?

A common question couples have when considering photography and videography is how much coverage do they actually need.

There isn’t a fixed answer. It depends less on the number of hours and more on how much of the day you would like documented.

Full Day Coverage

For most weddings, coverage begins during morning preparations and continues through to the evening.

This allows for a complete record of the day, not just the key parts but everything around them — the build-up in the morning, arrivals, time between events, and how the atmosphere changes as guests arrive and the day progresses.

This wider coverage helps to make the gallery and film feel cohesive and thorough.

Shorter Coverage

Shorter coverage usually centres around the ceremony and the parts of the day that follow it.

This can work well for smaller, more intimate weddings, particularly when everything is happening in one location. It naturally results in a more focused set of images and video, centred on the key moments rather than the shape of the full day.

Time Away From Your Guests

A common concern is how much time needs to be set aside during the day for group formals and couple portraits.

The honest answer is that it’s entirely up to you.

Many of our couples choose not to include family formals at all. If you do decide to have them, we usually keep this to around 10–15 minutes, depending on the number of groupings you’d like.

For couple portraits, there’s no need to set aside long periods of time. We typically recommend around 10–20 minutes, with the aim of getting you back to your guests without it feeling like you’ve been away for too long.

Some couples choose to keep this very short, while others prefer to spend a little more time together. Occasionally, couples choose to have a second session later in the day to capture the changing light.

There’s no expectation around this. You can include as much or as little as feels right for you — or even none at all.

What Shapes the Timeline

The amount of coverage needed is usually influenced by the structure of the day rather than the coverage itself.

Travel between locations, the length of the drinks reception, and how the ceremony and speeches are timed all tend to have more impact than anything else.

A wedding held in one place with a steady flow will feel very different to one that moves between venues or has longer gaps between key parts of the day.

How the Day Is Covered

Rather than building the timeline around photography and videography, our approach is to work within whatever is already happening.

Nothing is paused or repeated, and there’s no need to create moments for the sake of coverage. The focus stays on what’s already taking place — whether that’s something planned, like the ceremony, or something happening more quietly in the background.

Over the course of the day, this results in a record that reflects how it actually felt to be there, rather than something shaped around the coverage.

Coverage Length and Flexibility

Our full day coverage is up to 10 hours.

In practice, most weddings tend to fit comfortably within 8 to 9 hours. Allowing that margin helps avoid the day feeling pressured if timings change slightly, which they often do. If a wedding runs longer, additional time can always be added where needed.

Coverage can also be shaped around the plans for the day, rather than fitting into a fixed structure — our packages are simply there as a guide.

For smaller weddings or elopements, coverage begins from 2 hours, with the same approach applied regardless of the length of the day..

What Tends to Work Well

For many couples, a balance is found in starting coverage during morning preparations or shortly before the ceremony, and continuing through to the early part of the evening.

This allows the day to be documented fully, without it feeling like anything has been missed.
